Postby rkaiser108 » Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:59 pm

Don,
My wife and I have not played Bliss in a ltttle span and when I went to open it, it would not. I have the latest patch already installed. Any suggestions?

Hi,

I know of no reason that it would just stop working. My guess would be a change in your Java environment of some sort. What operating system are you using this on?

You might try running it from the Java command line and see if you get a useful error message.

Thanks,

Don

Im sorry Don. I cannot figure it out. I deleted and downloaded the Java because I thought that it might have been the issue, and I also downloaded the full new version of Bliss Java. It still will not run. Are there settings in Java that need to be set, that you are aware of?

Don,
I hope I did this right. If I run Java trace, I get an exception at line=200 bci=72 and line=205 bci=28. Does this help?

Hi,

I am unaware of any particular settings that must be set other than the normal class path.

The line 200 bci information is not anything that I have heard of. I think it might have to do with byte code instrumentation, but it is not a normal exception report or stack trace.

If you open a shell window, go to the Bliss directory, and run java -jar bliss.jar do you get any output at all?

Thanks,

Don

no, nothing. The weird thing is, I can run other Java programs. If I download Bliss a second time and try and run it, will it allow me to do this. I am thinking about deleting the bliss I have and reinstalling it from a fresh download. From your experience, would this help?

I also want to thank you for your help.

Hi,

That stack trace tells me exactly what is going on. Thanks

Bliss is crashing in the very early stages of initialization when it is tryint to create a Java JFileChooser. This is the dialog that you see when you open a file. This jFileChooser is created up front and is shown whenever one is needed, mostly when choosing a skin.

The Java code that makes the file chooser is unable to find some images that it needs (like the My Computer icon).

This appears to me to be a corrupted Java installation. It would still work for many programs, but this problem would always be there for anything that needs a JFileChooser.

I would suggest that you uninstall and reinstall Java. I think that will fix this. I know this sounds like a pat answer, but it really does appear that this is the problem.

Thanks,

Don

Don,
Just to give an update. I have deleted Java and reinstalled it, I also downloaded Bliss into another folder and tried to run it. I get nothing.

I will keep trying though. If/when I get this resolved, i will let you know to add to your box of issues, incase it happens to others.

Hi,

There is one thing I thought of that you could try, but it requires that you use regedit to edit the registry. If you are not familiar or comfortable with regedit, don't do this as you could harm your operating system if you were to do something wrong.

I would suggest that you delete the registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Javasoft\prefs\com\games/for/loving and all of it's sub keys.

Note that forward slashes and backslashes are not the same here.

DOING THIS WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOSE YOUR LICENSE KEY. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A COPY OF THAT FIRST.

By deleting this key, you will remove all stored preferences. This may be having some effect on the problem.

Thanks,

Don

Don, I did a reg. search with the link that you posted and my registry found nothing. I know that you are going above and beyond and I thank you for that. Everything works on my Desktop, I just cannot figure out why it won't work on my laptop.

Once again, Thank you.

Hi,

The .NET action editor can read or write either type of file. So you can read .bjf files and write them as .bdf files using the .NET action editor.

However, there is currently a bug in the .NET action editor, it can't read .bjf files with custom equipment. If this is an issue, let me know, it will be fixed shortly anyway.
